Facilitation in the Practice of Project Planning & Management

In response to a request for “stuff” on the topic in the Title of this post – I found myself constructing a very long email – which I have now converted a bit to become this post.

Project Planning is a critical aspect of most – but not all – Instructional Design efforts and Performance Improvement efforts – and a topic that I have written on in articles and books – and presented on many times in the past.

Here is a 90 Video from a past ISPI Conference that I did on the planning aspects of the role of a Project Manager – in my view. And here are the slides for that. And here are the slides for a presentation I did on this topic at Purdue in 2001.

Here is an article I did in 1986 on Project Management for the Chicago Chapter of NSPI (now ISPI) – here. Proj Mgmt – CNSPI -1986 – 9 page PDF – originally published in the Chicago Chapter of NSPI (ISPI) Newsletter in December 1986 – on my Project Management Techniques for Project Definition, Project Planning and Project Communications.

I created the following for use when I was President of ISPI (2003-4) – as I wanted to make sure that all voices got heard a little before anyone took/commandeered the floor and that we avoided heated agreements…to save our time for where there truly was a disagreement.

And I have these 12 “Rules/Guidelines” for Facilitation of my PACT Processes for T&D/ Learning/ Knowledge Management… expanded here a bit (for a series of posts) from the chapter that covers them in my lean-ISD book and now in three new books (updated from these below) on Analysis and CAD and MCD…which I think are not unique to Project Management – but applicable to that and to a team/group approach to analysis, design, etc.

The Group Process approach was first published – as it applied to Curriculum Architecture efforts (modular T&D Paths) in Training Magazine in September 1984 – here. CAD – Training Mag – 1984 – 6 page PDF – the first publication about Curriculum Architecture Design via a Group Process – published in Training Magazine in September 1984.

As it applied to Analysis in NSPI’s (ISPI now) Performance & Instruction Journal in November of 1984 – here. Models and Matrices- NSPI PIJ -1984 – 5 page PDF – the first publication of the performance and enabler analysis methods for ISD, from NSPI’s (ISPI’s) Performance & Instruction Journal, November 1984.

In 1986-7 I also had done the analysis, design and development – plus 31 deliveries – of an 8-day Product Management course for AT&T Network Systems – where the focus was on an immersive experience in managing the product development cycle via a cross-functional team process. Over 60% of the course was in skill-building simulations of planning and then running a cross-functional team meeting. That is described in these articles:

Product Mgmt Process Training – ATT – 1987 – 1 page PDF from an internal AT&T Newsletter for trainers about the simulation exercise “game” I had designed in 1986 for an 8-day course for Product Managers that was pilot-tested in the fall of 1987.

NS CAD 1986-7 – 2 page PDF – from the internal “AT&T Training Information Exchange” newsletter of October 1987 about the 8-day course for Product Managers pilot tested in 1987 – and the Product Management model we had created based on the analysis efforts – that in combination with a Product Life Cycle model we created (no common one existed at the time) guided the content of this 8-day “Basics” course.

Project Planning are so important – in my view – that the upfront planning deserved its own Phase in by phased methodologies for CAD and MCD…

This aspect of ISD efforts are covered in two of my new (in 2011) books:

3. Performance-Based Curriculum Architecture Design

4. Performance-Based Modular Curriculum Development

I hope this post and references – and new books – are helpful!
