Happy Halloween – For Some of Us – For Others, Not So Much

For some – this isn’t a Happy Halloween.

It’s Not Just Those Who Were Left in the Wake of Sandy

That’s just above the fold – as they say.

Below the fold – are many people who wish they had had something to lose in the first place.

While we enjoy ourselves – let’s keep a balance.

Me – 12 years ago at a CADDI Halloween office party.

I had learned in the US Navy, from my XO, to never be afraid to be the butt of the joke.

It was good for crew morale. For your staff to see that you are not above it all.

Here in 2001 at the next office party, office boy Levi pokes some fun at “the man” … the majority owner … me …

My only issue with him afterwards – was – did he pick up that piece of paper on the floor, or not?

Have a party. Enjoy work and enjoy life.

But remember all of the others who aren’t so lucky as to be at a party today. Who are digging out – and those wishing that they could be digging out – but on on hold until the water recedes.

Here, in this next picture, where I think I am looking thoughtful in my silly costume – I’d like to think that I am thinking about MEGA.

Mega is from Roger Kaufman, whom I’ve known from NSPI/ISPI for decades now.

Mega Planning

Kaufman has developed a model for strategic thinking and planning he calls “Mega Planning.” Kaufman argues that many organizational planning models incorrectly begin, and end, with internal or organizational performance and therefore fail to provide organizations a chance to plan how they deliver value outside of their organizations. Traditional planning ends with “Macro” level results, which are organizational results such as profits, graduation rates, ratings, etc. While these are important measures of organizational performance, they do not indicate the impact of an organization on external clients and society. Kaufman’s model is similar to some of the concepts behind “double bottom line” literature.

“Mega Planning” starts with the question of “What kind of world do you want for your children and grand-children?” with responses distilled in terms of consequences. An Ideal Vision defines the measurable variables for Mega planning including survival, self-sufficiency, and quality of life. He calls Mega planning (a system approach) “Mother’s Rule” because if you ask just about any mother what kind of world they want for their children, they don’t talk to means (credentials of teachers, money spent on social programs) but the survival, health, and happiness of their children.

Back to Halloween…

Gov. Christie Postpones Halloween

From NJ Governor Christie – a Press Release today…

I’ve taken this action to minimize additional risks to lives and the public safety as we begin the process of rebuilding and recovering from Hurricane Sandy,” said Governor Christie. “In too many communities in our state, the damage and losses from this storm are still being sorted out, and dangerous conditions abound even as our emergency management and response officials continue their work. As Governor, it is my responsibility to use all available resources of the state government to protect against the emergency created by Hurricane Sandy – postponing Halloween celebrations by five days is a commonsense and necessary step to accomplish that.

Other areas are doing this as well.

Which speaks to the survival, health, and happiness of their children.

Be safe. Watch out for children.

Globally. Everyday.

And enjoy yourself this evening – or November 5th in NJ.

And give out really good candy. And more than one little candy bar at a time – if that’s what you’re handing out.

Be generous. And think about the children.
