The Group Process for Performance and Instructional Analysis and Design

A Facilitated-Collaborative Approach

Nothing is perfect – but I have been assembling groups of Master Performers – and others – to define ideal performance and the gaps – and the enablers in the gap areas or across all of the Performance within scope of the project – since the late 1970s.

My business partners and I wrote about the approach almost 30 years ago (November of 1984) in this piece at NSPI’s (ISPI’s) Performance & Instructional Journal (PIJ)…

Models and Matrices- NSPI PIJ -1984 – 5 page PDF – the first publication of the performance and enabler analysis methods for ISD, from NSPI’s (ISPI’s) Performance & Instruction Journal, November 1984.

And we had written about the application of that analysis approach in design – of what today are generally called Learning Paths in this piece at TRAINING Magazine just a couple of months earlier in September 1984…

CAD – Training Mag – 1984 – 6 page PDF – the first publication about Curriculum Architecture Design via a Group Process – published in Training Magazine in September 1984. Original manuscript (30 pages) – How to Build a Training Structure That Won’t Keep Burning Down.

It – the Group Process – is central to my lean-ISD approaches of the PACT Processes… for both Analysis and Design – and often Development…

Those approaches – of lean-ISD – and the PACT Processes – are covered in this 1999 book…

Note: the cover design for “lean-ISD” was created by the late Geary A. Rummler.

Note: Guy W. Wallace’s book “lean-ISD” – was a recipient of a 2002 Award of Excellence for Instructional Communication from the International Society for Performance Improvement.

lean-ISD is also available as a $30 paperback book – for more and to order – please go – here.

But Wait – There’s More!

Well, updated anyway…

Those Group Process approaches – in my PACT (ISD) and EPPI (Performance Improvement) methodologies – were updated in this 6-Pack in 2011…

And the Group Process – was also covered my chapter, 11, of this 2006 publication…

Modeling Mastery Performance and Systematically Deriving the Enablers for Performance Improvement – by Guy W. Wallace, CPT – Chapter 11 of the Handbook of Human Performance Technology – 3rd Edition.  This methodology was first published in this 1984 article in ISPI’s (then NSPI’s) PIJ in November 1984.

In Video Too!

And it’s covered here in this video – in the facilitation of a Design Meeting – for a Curriculum Architecture Design – Design Team Meeting – and in many other videos in my School of PACT Video Podcast series

Video Short C5- CAD – Design Meeting

One must always be careful about SMEs – and MPs – not being able to recall all of the details of what a novice performer needs to perform. The skills of the facilitator is key.

That skill-set – is covered in these next videos…
