PACT Definition

The PACT Processes are my ISD – Instructional Systems design processes, methods, tools and techniques – that I have been deliberately evolving since 1982 … and include Curriculum Architecture design and my version of ADDIE: Modular Curriculum Development.

There are 5 methodology-sets in PACT:

The PACT Processes articles…

CAD – Training Mag – 1984 – 6 page PDF – the first publication about Curriculum Architecture Design via a Group Process – published in Training Magazine in September 1984. Original manuscript (30 pages) – How to Build a Training Structure That Won’t Keep Burning Down.

Models and Matrices- NSPI PIJ -1984 – 5 page PDF – the first publication of the performance and enabler analysis methods for ISD, from NSPI’s (ISPI’s) Performance & Instruction Journal, November 1984.

Proj Mgmt – CNSPI -1986 – 9 page PDF – originally published in the Chicago Chapter of NSPI (ISPI) Newsletter in December 1986 – on my Project Management Techniques for Project Definition, Project Planning and Project Communications.

Product Mgmt Process Training – ATT – 1987 – 1 page PDF from an internal AT&T Newsletter for trainers about the simulation exercise “game” I had designed in 1986 for an 8-day course for Product Managers that was pilot-tested in the fall of 1987.

NS CAD 1986-7 – 2 page PDF – from the internal “AT&T Training Information Exchange” newsletter of October 1987 about the 8-day course for Product Managers pilot tested in 1987 – and the Product Management model we had created based on the analysis efforts – that in combination with a Product Life Cycle model we created (no common one existed at the time) guided the content of this 8-day “Basics” course.

Cost of Nonconformance and ROI for Training Projects _ASTD – 1991 – 9 page PDF of the original (not the published version) article submitted and published in ASTD’s Technical & Skills Journal in their May-June 1991 issue under the title: Costing Out a Training Project (which it did not address). This presents an alternative approach for determining ROI that was unique to one of my client’s situation, and proxy for ROI: RONA – using the quality concepts of Cost of Non-Conformance and the Costs of Conformance in place of returns and Investments respectively.

The Detailed Project Plan – GWW – 1992 – 4 page PDF – originally published in the Svenson & Wallace, Inc. newsletter: Management Update – in the Summer of 1992.

Teaming for T&D GWW 1999 – 5 page PDF – on my story of inadvertently creating a team – out of frustration with too many revision cycles for a video script I was writing –  for training development back in 1979 – and liking the approach for using a Group Process to shorten cycle times and improve the quality of the output.

PACT Pilot-Test Debriefing Guide – 3 page PDF – presents an overview of how I debrief Pilot-Test participants in ISD efforts. Written in the mid-1990s, published in 1999.

Debriefing PACT Processes – 6 page PDF – article from the 1999 CADDI Newsletter “Pursuing Performance” on my debriefing process for the Analysis and Design Teams in the PACT Processes for Training, Learning and Knowledge Management.

ISPI Masters Series Article – lean-ISD – PIJ – 2001 – 14 page PDF – written as a companion piece to my 2001 Masters Series presentation at ISPI, this provides the background and an overview of lean applied to ISD – Instructional Systems Design – in the 5 methodology-sets of my PACT Processes for Training, Learning and Knowledge Management. Written in 2000, published in ISPI’s Performance and Improvement Journal in 2001.

PACT Alpha Phase Client-Stakeholder Interview Guide – 10 page PDF – is a job aid for the initial meetings with the client and other key stakeholders for a Training Request. Developed in the mid-1990, and published in 2002.

MCD-lite PP – 2002 – 10 page PDF – of when and how to shorten the “standard process” for my version of ADDIE (MCD – Modular Curriculum Development) – when the client isn’t attempting training for skills – but communications for awareness. Written to convince a client to not force every effort to go through the same rigorous approach when the desired outcome wasn’t skills-building. I was unsuccessful in convincing them. Originally written in 1997.

NS 1251 Product Management Process Training – GWW – 4 page PDF – on the story of the AT&T Network Systems effort for Product Management Basics Training – which was the keystone course in a Curriculum Architecture effort begun in 1986 – something I designed and developed – and then delivered – an effort ending for me in 1993 with deliveries by me 31 times, including 6 in The Netherlands.

Push-Pull Knowledge Management Systems 2000 – 8 page PDF – of my approach to creating a Push-Pull approach to a Knowledge Management System – using my PACT Processes for Training, Learning and Knowledge Management. Written in 2000 for the CADDI newsletter: lean-ISD.

Designing for the ISD Life-Cycle – ISPI PIJ – 2002 – 13 page PDF – my reaction to the latest critique (at the time) about the value or lack-thereof of ADDIE.

Perf Modeling & Enabler Analysis – HR-Com – 2003 – 17 page PDF – an online publication at HR.Com in 2003 covering the analysis of both Performance Competence Requirements and the Enablers – part of my ISD (PACT) and Performance Improvement (EPPI) methods.

CAD – ASTD – 2004 – 5 page PDF – an overview of when to do a Curriculum Architecture Design effort, the outputs of the effort by phase, and the 4 phases of a Curriculum Architecture design effort, published in ASTD’s Links in 2004.

Modeling Mastery Performance and Systematically Deriving the Enablers for Performance Improvement – by Guy W. Wallace, CPT – Chapter 11 of the Handbook of Human Performance Technology – 3rd Edition – 2006.  This methodology was first published in this 1984 article in ISPI’s (then NSPI’s) PIJ in November 1984.

Performance-based ISD – ISPI PX 12-part Series – 2007 – 122 page PDF – an update in 12-parts to my 1999 book: lean-ISD – which covers my ISD methods: The PACT Processes for T&D, Learning and Knowledge Management. Published in ISPI’s PerformanceExpress during the 12 months of 2007.

The PACT Video Shorts Series … Over 55 Free Videos

These free videos – over 55 in number – plus free books, articles and presentations – can help you develop your ability to practice PACT – adopted and adapted as your situation calls for.

The intent of this Video Series of The School of PACT – is to help others in the development of their Performance Competence in whatever Instructional Design and/or Performance Improvement roles that they have, and help them master the PACT Processes – as either adopted or adapted – for the sake of the Enterprise and its Stakeholders – and to produce significant Performance Impact and Return On Investments (ROI).

PACT has 3 levels of flexible ISD – and shared, common Analysis and Project Planning & Management tools and techniques. PACT has been field tested and proven in dozens of Enterprise Contexts – on hundreds of external client projects by myself and my staff,  and hundreds and hundreds  more on internal projects conducted by my client’s staffs – and can be adapted for any Enterprise context’s needs and constraints.

The PACT Video Shorts Series Index and Links

There are multiple Videos of varying lengths in each of the 8 Categories below…

A- PACT Overviews

B- PACT Analysis

C- CAD – Curriculum Architecture Design

D- MCD – Modular Curriculum Development

E- IAD – Instructional Activity Development

F- Project Planning & Management

G- Group Process Facilitation Tips

H- EPPI – Performance Improvement

Because we believe in Performance-Based Training & Development (a.k.a: Performance-Based Learning) our ISD methods require Analysis of the Performance Competence Requirements – which naturally leads to the identification of other Performance Improvement leverage in all other areas beyond awareness/ knowledge/ skills of the Performer, so too does our video series lead to our Performance Improvement (PI) method.
