T&D: Move As Much Of Your Content To A Self-Paced Mode As Possible

I Frame Modes For Deployment In The Design Team Meeting

There are 3 Modes – that can use various Media:

  • Group Paced
  • Self Paced
  • Coached

Slide1

In 1981 I and my peers at MTEC – Motorola’s Training & Education Center – were challenged by our leader, Bill Wiggenhorn, to move as much of our new and existing Content to a Self Paced Mode.

That would make it easier for our Target Audiences to get what they needed when they needed it. That also enabled us to chunk it in smaller modules – THINK MICRO.

When there were Practice & Feedback components necessary – and when that was not needed one could deliver a Document to read (this was 1981) versus a traditional Course – one could still split out the INFOs and DEMOs and save the APPOs (Application Exercises) for F2F Mode of Group Paced or Coached.

Chunking – It’s Not a New Thing

The new buzz name is Micro. And the ubiquitous technology that everyone seems to have nowadays – makes it more feasible as an option.

But it’s not NEW School. It’s OLD School.

That’s all that’s changed – the technology available – and then the feasibility – IMO – besides the label change from Chunking to Micro.
