T&D: Plan For the Inevitable ISD Tool Evolution

Moving Targets

Tools will continue to evolve. Worry about the Forward Compatibility of your Content.

After you prove the performance impact capability of that Content in the job environment. First things first.

I do mean “tools” in the hardware/software sense in this post – and not all of the other ISD/ID Theories, Concepts, Models, Methods and Techniques, that go along with Tools that make up one’s Professional Kit.

I was warned by fellow ISPIers, back in the late 1990s, to not try to have my consulting firm try to keep up with all of the Tools (Hardware/Software) as it was killing their Detroit-based ISD consulting business.

So I became a Tool Agnostic, and would hire in subcontractors who knew particular Tools when my staff did not, have the subs teach my staff, and use the client’s licenses when we could.

So my message really was to be careful about getting locked in. Plan for Continuous Improvement in Tools, and all of the implications of that moving target in your Business Strategic and Tactical Plans and Budgets.

Keeping up with what’s new and coming is covered in 11 O’Clock in my 2001 book: T&D Systems View – and in my thoughts about Strategic Planning for T&D.

Strategic Planning for T&D

Although this was delivered at ISPI in 1996 – I think it is mostly timeless…
