T&D: Form Follows Function and Artistry Follows Engineering IMO

I’ve Heard the Debate For 4 Decades Now

ISD – Instructional Systems Design – is either an Art – or a Science. Of course, as with most things, it’s a blend. Great ISDers balance both.

Note – I have always preferred the term ISD to ID as I prefer people who think about – if not work on – Instruction as a System. Not just a one-off.

Project Planning, Analysis and Design should be more Engineering than Art.

But they should be both.

Development should be more Art than Engineering.

But it should be both.

Pilot Testing and Revisions & Release should be more Engineering than Art.

But they should be both.

Finding that balance is sometimes tricky.

And for some – they’re like one-way streets. Not everyone can bat from both sides of the plate. Figure out what side of the plate you swing from. Ask others for their thoughts about yourself.

Figure out what you are best at. And appreciate those who bring “the other aspect” to the table. It takes a blend.
