Iterations Are Not Lean

So avoid them – or plan to minimize them. Or fix your methods.

Iterate in Development with a planned Alpha Test and update, then a Beta Test and update, and finally a Pilot Test and update. Iterate there.

But not back to Analysis. Or to Design – unless what you had designed was experimental.

Make sure your Analysis Methods pin down the Performance Requirements and the Performance Context well enough so as to avoid iterations back to Square One.

  1. It’s very interesting. Could you please provide rationale? Why doesn’t it work? I believe there might be truth, but I don’t know why. We’re trying both approaches at work. It’s still unclear which is better. I wonder what is the root cause why one method would work better than another.

    • The concepts and processes of “lean” as in Lean-SixSigma, otherwise known as streamlining – is all about reducing unnecessary steps. The key is not in eliminating all “iterations” such as doing Alpha, Beta and Pilot Testing in the Development Phase (covered in this post: https://eppic.biz/2019/03/18/ya-got-me-im-a-waterfall-kind-of-guy/ ) – but if your Development efforts consistently fail in those 3 types of developmental testing then you’d probably want to troubleshoot your Design processes & practices, and then maybe (as necessary) your Analysis processes & practices, and then maybe (as necessary) your Project Planning & Management processes & practices. No one’s clients want unnecessary rework – which is what unnecessary iterations are IMO. If you can anticipate necessary iterations – such as for Alpha, Beta and Pilot Testing, they can be planned for and not have a negative impact to costs and schedules. Hope that helps. Cheers!
