T&D: Spaced Learning to Fight the Forgetting Curve

For Option 1

If it was deemed earlier that the Job Aid (Guidance, EPSS, SOP, Quick Reference Guide, Performance Support, etc., etc., etc.) was sufficient as a Standalone resource … then nothing is really needed – except perhaps – a “reminder” that it exists and where/how to access it.

Unless the Job Itself requires this performance frequently and provides enough feedback quickly enough for recovery/correction – then that routine performance becomes the Spaced Learning.

Spend your Resources elsewhere.

For Option 2

If the Job Aid (like an SOP) is a “guide sans nuances” – telling one “what to do” but not the details of exactly “how to do it” – then Spaced Learning might go after those nuances of “how to do” it while using the Job Aid. That’s what might be forgotten – the devil in the details.

Again, let the Frequency of Performance on the job – and the Risks and Rewards of that performance – guide your decision to ward off Forgetting using Spaced Learning.

For Option 3

Theoretically only High Risk and High Reward performance are addressed using this option. Everything else is left to Informal Learning – learning “by hook or by crook” where “they’ll figure it out soon enough” and where “errors are not costly” suggest to leave this alone and not spend another nickel on it.

So is Spaced Learning needed on everything addressed by Formal T&D/L&D where we need memorization and skills to be honed before learning even more on the job takes over.
