I’ve only known Con for several months, and that’s due to my friendship with Con’s business partner, Bob Mosher.
Recently we’ve done a couple of videos … and now this HPT Video makes number 3.
From The 5 Moments of Need website
Dr. Conrad Gottfredson is a founding partner, and the Chief Learning Strategist, at The 5 Moments of Need, an organization that specializes in helping learning professionals design, develop, maintain, and measure effective learning and performance support through The 5 Moments design methodology.
Con earned his PhD in Instructional Psychology and Technology in 1984. After graduate school, he immediately began working on his “Rw.E. (Real-world Experience) at Standard Oil of Ohio. It was during his oversight of the training, help desk, and technical documentation groups at Standard Oil’s corporate research center that Con recognized that there are 5 Moments of Learning Need. It was also during this time that he began pioneering a performance-based approach to Instructional Systems Design. After leaving Standard Oil in 1988, he began an independent consulting practice during which he has continued to evolve through Real-world Experience an agile instructional design methodology that is now known as EnABLE.
Con has deep experience helping organizations optimize their entire learning ecosystem. He helps companies identify and implement The 5 Moments of Need Solutions along with the methodology, technology, and organizational support infrastructure they need to be able to design, build, implement, optimize and evaluate those solutions. He has designed, developed, and managed many hundreds of learning and performance solutions addressing the complete scope of delivery systems, strategies, audiences, and settings. These settings have ranged from small to large international corporations, governmental agencies, universities, and religious organizations.
Con has also worked with Learning and Development teams to establish collaborative instructional development and maintenance processes to eliminate wasteful redundancies and focus on specialized skills and knowledge. These collaborative development models have provided significant cost benefits in environments of constrained resources and overwhelming development requirements.
Con is also an accomplished author and speaker. He is the co-author of: Innovative Performance Support: Tools and Strategies for Learning in the Workflow and a contributing author to Timothy Clark’s book: The Employee Engagement Mindset: The Six Drivers for Tapping into the Hidden Potential of Everyone in Your Company. He is also a regular author in many industry magazines such as Learning Solutions Magazine and CLO Magazine. He has developed and presented public seminars to many thousands of participants both nationally and internationally.
Con is currently also a senior partner, and the Chief Learning Strategist, at APPLY Synergies, a strategic consulting firm that specializes in helping learning organizations design, develop and measure effective learning and performance support strategies to meet The 5 moments of learning need.

Guy’s HPT Video Series
The HPT Video Series … formerly known as the HPT Practitioner and HPT Legacy Video Series … was started by Guy W. Wallace in 2008 as a means of sharing the diversity of HPT Practitioners, and the diversity of HPT Practices in the workplace and in academia.
The full set of videos – over 135 – may be found and linked to – here.
HPT – Human Performance Technology – is the application of science – the “technology” part – for Performance Improvement.
As the late Don Tosti noted, “All performance is a human endeavor.”
Whether your label for HPT is that, or Performance Improvement, or Human Performance Improvement, it is all about Evidence Based Practices for Performance Improvement at the Individual level, the Team level, the Process level, the Department level, the Functional level, the Enterprise level, and at the level of Society/World.
HPT Practitioners might operate at any of these levels, as this Video Series clearly demonstrates.
Although ISPI – the International Society for Performance Improvement is the professional home of many HPT Practitioners – the concepts, models, methods, tools and techniques are not limited to any one professional affinity group or professional label.
ISPI just happens to be where I learned about HPT – and has been my professional home since 1979.
This Series Has Evolved Since 2008
These videos were first posted on Google Video, then they were moved to Blink, and now they may all be found on YouTube. And my name for them has changed as well…
HPT Practitioner Video Podcasts and HPT Legacy Video Podcasts
– Practitioner Series – short 2-10 minutes, following a script. Intended to show the diversity of HPT and HPT Practitioners. (2008-2018)
– Legacy Series – longer 15-40+ minutes, also scripted, with added stories of other NSPI/ ISPI’ers from the earlier days of the Society or others who were of great influence. Intended to capture the stories of the people who influenced us. (2008-2018)
– HPT Video Series (2019+) – is a continuation of the first two types of videos in this series, but with less focus on capturing NSPI/ISPI members – and expanding out to any and all who use Evidence Based Practices in Performance Improvement regardless of any affiliation with ISPI or not.
