Everyone once in a while – over the past 2 or 3 decades, I’ve read or heard people talking about changing the name of the department/function from L&D to something else.

The late Joe Harless first addressed this back in the 1980s when he suggest that the name of NSPI (now ISPI), the National Society for Performance and Instruction, was akin to the Department of Transportation and Bicycles.

The Name Game

Just as some Sales Training functions have changed to Sales Enablement – some might be considering changing from L&D to Performance Enablement. I’d be fine with that if they were focused “beyond but including instruction” and not just some version of Performance-Based Instruction/ Training/ Learning.

Performance requires much more than just knowledgeable and skilled people. Much more.
