Starting a Greenfield ISD Function
If you were a T&D/L&D/ISD Manager who had a chance to start a greenfield operation – as opposed to one asked to clean up an existing operation – where would you start?
Would it be different – addressing greenfield vs existing operations? My thoughts on that later in the post.
I’d start with this FREE BOOK – also available as a Kindle or paperback. This book came out of several consulting gigs in the late 1980s and early 1990s where I helped my clients address their assignments to reorganize their operations.
They liked my “process orientation” which was all the rage back in the day – with the TQM Movement, and the ReEngineering the Organization focus, etc. So out of those efforts came my model … 47 Processes … organized into 12 sub-functions – and my 2001 book: T&D Systems View.

Note: In my view Guidance – Job Aids – EPSS – Performance Support- Workflow Learning are all different names/labels for “Instruction“

This is based on a consulting engagement for ARCO of Alaska where I modified my approach/methods to CAD/MCD for this project and constructed the Training for our staff and subcontractors – and I participated in the first Analysis Team and Design Team Meetings – to prove the process. It worked.
The Acid Test – for Instruction is, can they do the job?
And yes – I have a book – available as a FREE BOOK – and as a Kindle or paperback. From 2007, written with my former business partner (1982-1997), the late Ray Svenson.
In the post-Analysis efforts for Design we specify the following types of Performance Tests:
- Real Work
- Simulated Work
- Talk-Through Troubleshooting
These are covered in Chapter 4 of this book, based on our 2 projects in Alaska and several more for our clients in the lower 48, as they say.

I like the 9 part cover diagram! Clear, simply written, easy to follow. The book format and layout look good – eye appeal! Excellent introductory chapters. Chapters 3-6 provide a good overview of the system. Chapters 7-10 provide more detail about the system. Excellent lists and tables. You’ve hit the target and are on the mark!
This is a manual for building a bullet-proof, performance-based qualification and certification system. As complex as a project of this magnitude could be, this book provides the fundamental “how to.”
Very well done! I like the conversational style. You’ve taken a relatively complex and detailed process but have handled describing it with plain business language. The one thing I really like about all the work you guys have done together is that you are always aware of the needs of the business at every point of the process.
The project plan for the TMC Stores case study is worth the price of admission. It provides very good picture of how it all comes together. Nice addition! If I was charged with that responsibility, this book is where I’d start! Given the book as the operating guide, I think I could take the project plan and begin to do it!

Would It Be Different – Addressing Greenfield vs Existing Operations?
My thoughts… Maybe. Maybe not. ;)
Based on the agreement and willingness of existing staff in that context – that change is needed is will be easy or darn difficult. And then there is their involvement in creating the change. If change is simply imposed – it’ll be tough sledding, so to speak. If the participants own the changes – they should be more willing to test and continuously improve the initial changes.
If you are in a greenfield situation – you either get to start the design in your head and on paper before putting anything into place – which will actually take place when you have staff and environmental assets/resources in order to bring a paper process to life.
So the same applies – involving people – in creating the new Processes and Practices.
