I learned how to conduct Instructional Analysis in this way back in 1979. I was told that it was a derivative of a derivative of a Geary Rummler approach to Instructional Analysis. The materials I was given my first week out of college and in a T&D function included this from a Praxis Workshop from 1972.

I don’t have many copies of the data from way back in the day – but this 1986 example was typical of the level of detail we did for CAD – Curriculum Architecture Design efforts starting in 1982 after I left Motorola and joined Ray Svenson’s small consulting shop. Deeper levels of data would be gotten for Instructional Development projects as Gaps and Priorities dictated.
And that deeper Analysis typically happened in the Development Phase – when we knew we really needed it. And if the Gap wasn’t a priority it would be left to Unstructured OJT (much later known as Informal Learning).
Here is an example Performance Model chart from a 1986 consulting project:

Here are the Areas of Performance – but our client was a fan of Gilbert so we used that term: Accomplishments:

And here is on Knowledge/Skill Matrix:

And here are the K/S categories I was using back then:

Here is a PowerPoint Show some sample pages from this Analysis effort:
Here are 4 of my most recent books – the Structured Social Learning book should be out late January /early February 2022 – all address this approach to Analysis and how that’s then used in Design and Development:
